Question #249 Doctor

Are you honest with your doctor? Do you tell them how much you drink? How much unprotected sex you have? The drugs you take? Cigs you smoke? ETC...

I'm afraid I haven't always been honest with myself about some of those things. I try to be honest with the doc though, besides, they always seem to know.

You have to be honest with the doc cause the doc isn't trying to judge you and isn't any use to you if you lie. If you aren't honest with the doc then the doc will assume the worst and assume you are chainsmoking during drug-fueled orgies.

I'm always completely honest with my doctor, but I'm very picky when I choose a doctor... though I'm pretty sure my doctor doesn't know any dirt about me that all of my friends don't also know. I'm kind of an open book like that.
Further, I think it is very important to divulge your vices even if they seem insignificant. For instance, in college (round one of it) I was getting crazy headaches... the amazing dr. wu told me to stop eating so much icecream (of which I had once confessed to him that I ate about 3-4 bowls a day.Authors note:OH! For my 17 year old metabolism!). I got off it cold-turkey and the headaches completely stopped.

It should be noted that Dr. Woo (of Stockton fame) is credited with setting me straight.

After he explained that he could tell that I'd been drinking a lot [during my college years], by just the pulse in my left wrist, I was astounded.

I have a question however. When a doctor asks if I am a smoker, but I don't consider myself a smoker...is it necessary to bring up the "two or three ciggy's I had last week during finals"?

I don't really think it is.

DR. WU*

doh!

I think the fact that you call them 'ciggy's probably can discount you as being a hardcore smoker :)

And they were probably menthols.

I am always honest with the doctor...
But like when you try and explain such things as yes, i smoke cigarretes on occasion... which is absolutely true... i am convinced they like immediately check the Chainsmoker box on their patient form or whatever...

But i try....

i'm completely honest with the doctor. granted i haven't been to one since i started smoking and drinking again. when i experience heart or liver failure, i'll gladly spill the beans on my lifestyle.

If I were seeing the doc to discuss whatever it is I’ve picked up on the road of unprotected sex, like say, the clap. Then, frankly, that has nothing to do with my cocaine habit. Just give me the antibiotic, light my ciggy, and quit judging me.

I would totally be honest if I had a regular doctor.

i didnt even know people weren't honest with their doctors until i was honest with mine and the lady flipped out. So then i started lying. But after getting crazy sick all the time and just generally being in shitty health 24/7, decided to go with 90% honesty at the doc. It sucks, but if you're embarassed it means you need to park the party bus for a while.

Why would you ever not tell the doctor the truth? Unless it's for work or any sort of involentary testing... or "assessment", like back in the day in the Reich. For example, back then I wouldn't have told the district doc that I am circumcized or have sex with my grandma or eat babies... these were obvious give-aways.

I'm mostly honest with the doctor. That is to say, if I drink 100 drinks a week, I tell the doctor that I drink 80 a week. Then he writes down "100 drinks/week" in his notes. Doctors are smart.
