InNOut Grilled Cheese with Everything for veggie-kids...
English swears by the Hoagie-Bogie burger at Chuck's in Stockton. According to their menu it is: 1/3 lb country sausage patty, served on an english muffin with grilled onions and cheese, bacon, tomato, mayo, lettuce and pickles. I've never had this but it is fun to watch him eat because he can't set it down or the whole thing falls apart... and he is so enamored with it that in between bites he just makes MMmmm noises.
So, I think it must be good.
Oh, he also loves the Father's Office burger in la la land. Don't know what is on it but I remember the meat is aged and they don't allow subsitutions. I'm just there for the beer.

I am going with Nation's Giant Cheeseburger. This Bay Area chain has late hours and the burger comes in at over 3/4 lb with everything on it. You will be a mess when you're done - and you won't need another meal all day. They also have pie...mmmmm, pie.

My own home-baked fries are the best, obviously. If I can't have mine, I'll take 'The Works' (chili-cheese) at Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington DC. With a chocolate shake!

I've-- ahem-- heard McDonald's in the UK has an incredible "burger" called the Veggie Mac. The patty is kind of Indian-ish and croquette-ish, made with peas, carrots, green bean, red capsicum, potatoes & rice. I wouldn't know, because I'd never eat at McDonald's, even if I was in another country where no one could see me and where they have totally awesome vegetarian stuff on the menu.

States-side, Chili's has a real good black bean burger and so does Sliders.

Fries... umm... I can't say who's the best, but I know it's definitely not In'N'Out.

Any honest person who has had the burger at shake shack would have to give that as their answer.

Shake Shack is in Madison Square Park in Manhattan and they make the Platonic ideal of what a burger should be.

There are other places in NYC where you can get really burgers that have caviar on the bun or that are served inside of a laser but that stuff is ridiculous. The big-shot restaurateur who runs shake shack, Danny Meyer, has enough confidence to limit the menu and concentrate on making something absolutely perfect.

It isn't open year round. When it is open, you usually have to wait in line for 45 minutes unless you are lucky and it is a rainy day, then you can go there with no wait at all. It's worth the wait and the $5 you have to pay, believe me. Everything anyone says about it is true.

I like in-n-out just fine but there's really no comparison.

I've heard that Citifield, the NY Met's new stadium, is going to have a Shake Shack inside of it which makes me think that the line in front of it will be longer than the line to get on Space Mountain.

I don't like fries as much. I don't like what Burger King did when they changed their fry recipe to try to outdo Mcdonald's at their own game of having crispy fries. Their current fries are like a reducto ad absurdum.

I like the big thick cut fries you can get at a chip shop that have vinegar all over them.

I will opt for a well-seasoned homemade burger cooked on a grill any day of the week over anything else out there. Thadd, your's are always primo.

That said, as a consumer the ones that stand out are:

1.) The Buffalo Burger
@Pearl's Deluxe Burger (708 Post St)

2.)The Mega Mouth burger
@ Mega Mouth Burgers (3392 24th St )

3.) The Cheeseburger
@In-N-Out Burger (anywhere)

4.) The Utah Burger
@ Hotel Utah (500 4th St)

At some point, I'm going to make a point to try Custom Burger on 7th between Mission and Howard. My impression is it is good enough to take a top spot:

1. homemade cheeseburgers are the ultimate. i miss these. veggieburgers are good but just a different species of burger.

2. in-n-out grilled cheese are great. if you need a veggie patty, original gardenburgers are the best. Boca burgers are wrong.

3. barneys has great fries. in-n-out fries arent fit for human consumption. I cant get into thick cut fries, they are too potato-like. i dont need to know im eating a potato.

The best burger I ever had was at this small burger place.

It was a huge veggie with, tomatoes, lettuce, onions and condiments. Whatever, but it had crumbles of bleu cheese on it.

Mmmmmmm. That was a good burger.

Also, criss cut fries hands down.

Forgot the fries!
English pubstyle chips rock my socks.

They get extra taste-points with a side of curry sauce.

Without a doubt the best burger is SF belongs to Laszlo. The burger is only available on Saturday mornings, comes with some great fries and is $10 (with a beer!).

Anyway the secret to this burger is the meat. All the scraps from foreign cinema are ground on Saturday to make as much chuck as they can for the burgers that brunch... get them quickly as sometimes there are only 10 or so burgers to be had... I like mine these days without bacon (amazing) and some cheese, without a doubt the best burger... someday I will have two in one sitting... I can't wait for the coronary my friends.

Ditto to what Phoebe said. For those of you who didn’t get to see her hilarious post before she got embarrassed and took it down; she compared a Soho Park burger to a surprising sexual experience.

The point is: Soho Park has a great burger, but for some reason, no one in NYC seems to have ever heard of it. They all serve fried pickles, which are amazing.

And I’ve never met a fried potato I didn’t like.

I said discovering Soho Park's amazing burger is like discovering a shy nerdy guy has a gigantic penis, but I didn't want people to think I was objectifying men...So I guess I could also say that for guys, it's like discovering a shy nerdy girl has a gigantic vagina.

before i quit eating meat, i swore up and down that J.A.W.S. fish and chips in ukiah (no, i don't know what the acronym is for) had the best cheese burgers. once i quit eating meat i don't think i had a good veggie burger for years. then darhmas in capitola, ca had a limited time only rocking veggie burger. i don't recall what was in it, but i think it was something like a daal burger. yummy. no that i'm back on the meat (eating it, that is) i'm going to have to go with any burger that has a beer.

Comparing greatness in places you don't expect it, whether it's good hamburgers or gigantic penises is pretty funny and I for one am not offended. However if it's considered too offensive on this site, I will refrain from ever making a comment on here along the lines of "unexpectedly nice boobs" or something similar if that's what you were implying by removing your earlier post.

When I ate meat I also lived on a farm. I therefor ended up liking weird burgers ie lamburgers (we raised lambs) or venison-burgers(we murdered deer that got in to our orchard 'cause they would kill the young trees by eating their bark). Venison is good but it is a funny name for "deer-flesh".

I couldn't really get with the wild hog-burgers(Yorkville, where I lived, is known for the hunting of hogs with knives [ because i would keep thinking about trichanosis{sp?}.])

I agree with Victor about J.A.W.S.. The thing about those burgers is every 20th one you ate you would get food poisoning so it was kind of like eating blowfish: The risk is part of the experience.

Phoebe, maybe you could say: "like finding a person exhibiting diminished secondary sexual characteristics with exaggerated primary sexual characteristics!" I don't think it would be as funny however.

I agree with Victor and Joe about J.A.W.s in Ukiah. Amazingly delicious. I also know what the acronym is for: Jones and Wanda ('s). They were the original owners.

There's a vegan place in LA called Real Food Daily, and they have the RFD Burger with the Works. It's sooooo good. It has cashew cheese, avocado, a yummy patty and tempeh bacon. I am salivating just thinking about it. The best fries have to belong to Veggie Grill in Irvine. The Sweetheart fries (sweet potato fries)are perfectly crispy, not super greasy and just amazing. I'm with Jake on In n' Out fries. They have the saddest, blandest fries. I know too many people that think they have the best fries, and I don't get it at all. Although, I definitely prefer tater tots to fries.

Tiffany!: Father's Office burgers are [reportedly] so good because they use Kobe Beef cuts or something like that. I wouldn't know.

I agree with Jake on the Black bean burger from Chili's (with onion blossom pieces on it.)

-OR-

I remember loving my veggie burger from (what I think was/is called) Rocket Dogs in Sacramento, it was close to the nightclub Faces and it was open late night. Their specialty is adding a fried egg on top of any burger, which is a little bit of O.K. with me! It's been years since I was there last and I can't find them online. Bummer if it's gone; R.I.P. my eggy-friends.

I prefer my fries to be hand-cut and not too undercooked, but definitely not charred. A vegetarian curry is always welcomed along side. Or copious amounts of fry-sauce.

Sorry guys, the best burger is in Fort Worth, at a place called Kincaid's. It's 1/2 lb. of grass-fed beef, with mustard, lettuce, pickles, tomato, and onions.

Their fries are also my favorite cut, which are pixie crinkles.

Damn, I'm going to have to go have one for lunch now...
