When I was about 3 1/2 or so I memorized an entire "Golden Book on Tape" I think it was the story of Snow White. And Then I proceeded to pretend that I knew how to read the whole book. But when I turned the pages incorrectly, my parents got wise to my scheme and asked me to read a different book. I explained that I only liked that particular book and refuse to read any others. Kids are so weird. I have no idea what I actually read. Maybe Runaway Bunny or Blueberries for Sal.
It was The Cat in the Hat. My great grandmother had Alzheimer's and she and I were delighted to take turns reading it to each other over, and over, again.
Probably Goodnight Moon...Though my gramma has a VHS of me in 1983 reading aloud some book about a Mr. Pickle driving a car around town. I kept stammering. My elocution sucked.
Goodnight moon was for sure the first book I remember flipping through although I don't think that counts as reading.
I don't remember which book was actually first (despite any nascent bibliophilia that has been exhibited in recent years). The earliest ones I remember though are (predictably):
the first book i remember reading was "harry the dirty dog." it came with a seven inch record that would read the story as you read it. yes, i had harry the dirty dogs' first seven inch.
I think it was the '3 Little Pigs' read-along storybook record.
I recall working diligently on a 'Gentle Ben/Lassie' 2-in-one from the checkout line at the old Foodland which was located at the current Grocery Outlet location in Ukiah.
I think it was called "The Big Red Hen." My kindergarten teacher gave it to me. There was a dog, a cat, a mouse, and a hen on a farm. They all decided to have a cake, but first they have to grow the wheat or grain or whatever, etc.. For every step, they said, "But who will grow the grain?" or whatever the task was. It read:
"Not I," said the cat. "Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the mouse. "Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
In the end, they all wanted some cake, and she didn't give them any. I also remember Berenstein Bears, and "Run Spot, Run!"
Hey Black Violet, Disney did an adaptation of the wise little hen in the 30s and it is the first ever appearance of Donald Duck. The best part is when Donald hears the word "work" and it makes his hat fly off and then he goes to hide behind his houseboat.
Haha, I think I've seen that cartoon, because when someone asks me to do physical labor I sometimes reply with "Not I said the cat...".
I loved Little Bear and Frog and Toad. I also had a lot of nursery rhyme books and classic fairy tale type stuff. My favorite was probably Clifford the Big Red Dog.

My mom used to read us those Charlie Brown Encyclopedias when we went to bed, haha. I wnder if anyone still has those? They were great.
I'd get them for someone, but they're so old that I'm sure the info is outdated. I wish they'd update them.
