Probably Sick of It All, Redemption '87, Snapcase and Refused.
Mainly because they are all about brotherhood and never stabbed me in the back, but are also all about respect and social responsibility.
In addition, I'm pretty sure most of them are all about being kind to animals as well as unity in the scene.
And it's possible to interpret the lyrics of them to be at least vaguely anti-substance-abuse, which at times can be useful; this, of course, is perfectly balanced with implications of pro-individualism.
Oh, I'm not qualified to answer this question because I never did the hardcore thing. The closest I came was Minor Threat, which I assume is vastly different. Sorry!
NA was a great band and I think one of the only bands from the bay that really had a knack for writing and performing their songs with emotional strength each and every time they went on. The tension in the band transcended into the music and it was great to see.
Snapcase had some great lyrics, too many for me to type out.
'Shape of punk to come' is about all I can say about Refused... and CP loves them.
Inside Out, Into Another, 7 Seconds. I used to see lots of bands at Bond St. Cafe and the Pipeline in Newark. I'll never forget the hours and hours of my life I've spent watching crappy bands in the late 80's early 90's at ABC No Rio. Time clearly very well spent. But the only time I have ever passed out was at a hardcore basement show at my friend John Stanley's house when I cought a full force windmill by Big Chris (RIP) right in the stomach. I should mention that I do appreciate the above 3 bands tons. But mostly I went to these shows because my best friend loved the scene. Can't say I was the cool hardcore girl. More like a spectator of the scene.
I would have to say my favorite hardcore band of all time is either frail or reversal of man but followed closely by inkwell, I mean that shit just sounded awesome D.I. why bother my friends, Chris Roy
I think its probably Redemption 87 just on the basis of making me go off the hardest for the longest period of time from the smallest number of albums. YOT or Converge or Minor Threat come pretty close too.
As a special bonus my favorite hardcore band that went soft and poppy is for sure Lifetime. I am shattered that I didn't see them when they played recently.
As a double bonus my favorite time watching a hardcore band live was either when we saw Warzone play at the Troc (Raybeez died not very long after) or (embarrassingly) when we saw Earth Crisis play at the Maritime. "...Violence against violence; let the roundups begin..."
Just saw SOIA and Madball at the Key Club in Hollywood last night. SOIA had the crowd reenact Braveheart . . . one side of the pit clashing against the other, then forming into one lump of bodies and chaos . . . enough said.

My favorite hardcore band was none of them, I was pretty much equally into all of them which is to say not at all. It just was never my cup of tea.

hardcore is not my biggest area of expertise...but in this genre i will have to say Refused..
The Shape of Punk to come is still something that i listen to all the time and it came out like 10 years ago or something. crazy.

Non applicable. The fact that I own (and still listen to) Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel puts me on an island of lepors in the scheme of this genre.

I'm going with Bad Brains and sticking to it. Yeah, there's all the reggae strangeness...but when that stuff was straight - it was tops.
2nd choice - early Husker Du.
Refused-I could listen to The Shape of Punk to Come on repeat and never get tired.
American Nightmare- Every show I saw them played ruled and their lyrics were my favorite.
Sick of it All- Every time I see them play I can't stop smiling and I'm constantly surprised how sore I am the next day.

Hardcore was a very big deal to me at one time. I'd say the ones that mattered to me most are:
